Dear Parents, Guardians and Throckmorton Community,

“The perils of the world come to us all”.  This is a statement that was made by one of my professors when I was working on my mid-management certification. This phrase did not have much impact on me, being I was used to small town comforts my whole life. In retrospect, as I look at safety at Throckmorton School, it was a very pertinent expression.

As we review our safety protocols each year, our “open air” campus presents definable deficiencies in these protocols. These deficiencies can no longer be dispelled as safety issues that do not warrant concern because of our isolation to the populace. With this said, I am writing this correspondence to inform all stakeholders in Throckmorton School of new safety protocols that are being enacted at this time. This change is because of deficiencies in our plan and not because of a specific incident or a security breach.

Starting October 4th, access to the elementary school will be strictly controlled. All students, parents, guardians and visitors must check in with the High School office before admittance to the elementary is granted. Once the person is checked in at office, notification will be given to personnel at the elementary to allow entry to the school. Either notification or an escort to elementary will be used for entry. The doors will be locked at precisely 8:00 A.M. and will remain locked throughout the day. Please do not knock on the elementary door for entry. The office personnel and teachers have been instructed from administration on this new protocol and will not open doors without permission. Signs will be posted at the doors of the elementary to instruct all individuals on steps necessary to gain entry.

Additionally, entry to the cafeteria will be transitioning to the east door in the breezeway between the high school and elementary buildings.  This will include our students that arrive early to school.

These new procedures are to increase the safety of our students and our staff. We understand that this change may be inconvenient for all at times, but the safety of the elementary building takes precedence over our inconveniences. As with all change, it soon becomes habit and then an expectation. We are implementing these changes as our first step in securing our students and staff. Please bear with us as we make this transition in our school security.

We will have personnel posted for a limited time to help with this transition.

Respectfully,

David Farquhar

Principal
